The OMAY Project - NUTRITION GARDEN FOR SCHOOLS

John and Nicci Stevens began a project in 1997 in the Omay Communal Lands due to their photographic safari camp located there. This region has a severely arid climate and desperately needed assistance to grow food. Over these past several years, the Stevens have brought organization, permaculture training, and supplies to the Nebiri Primary School for a nutrition garden. This effort includes the irrigation, plants and fencing.

The development of this garden and orchard provides needed supplemental nutrition for the children at the school, and benefits the associated families. The Stevens are raising funds for the final phase to complete the work at the school, the main focus of which is to extend the depth of the borehole, and install the pump and pipes to the irrigation system. They will then be ready to take this model program to a different location, which has been determined to be a nearby primary school with seven times as many children!

Ancient Ways decided to offer the Stevens help with this project. They have had remarkable success and, like all people or organizations offering aid, have had to be creative in problem solving.
